Folklife Festival
Memorial Day weekend
Seattle Center

Even though it rained last weekend--so much so that some vendors closed up shop early, offering what was left of their wares on Sunday evening to passersby--the U-District Street Fair was a grand success. There were thousands of happy, food snarfing, dancing people in the streets between 42nd and 47th, gobbling down the offerings which ranged from hot dogs to African cuisine and everything else in between. Also, there was music everywhere, both planned and spontaneous street performers, who kept things bouncing along merrily. And by Sunday evening, anyone who was there could truly say that this year's festival, though wet, was a good start to the Seattle fair season.

But, if you missed the good times and meet and greets that happened last weekend during the U-District Street Fair, you can still grab a friend, put on your dancing shoes and head over to Seattle Center where more fun-loving folks will be hanging out at this year's Folklife Festival. Set for Memorial Day weekend, it'll undoubtedly be a welcome from all of the tumultuous events that have dogged the Seattle area in the form of various violent incidents and community squabbles over Pride. And yes, there'll be more food offerings from a variety of local vendors to sample, as well as music from local performers running the gamut from bluegrass, to hiphop, to Celtic and even some swing (if last year's memory serves me well).

So, put on your patchouli and sandalwood oil, your tie-die and come out to dance, frolic and munch with the rest of us who'll be kicking up our heels and enjoying the Spring with others like ourselves. Pick up a schedule at Seattle Center, or go online to www.Folklife.org. Oh, and it's still a free event.
