SGN A&E Writer Glamorous Life Of Sachiko Hanai June 1 - 7 Northwest Film Forum Mitsuru Meike's soft-core porn potboiler from 2003, Glamorous Life Of Sachiko Hanai, takes us on a field trip to the land of Japanese "pink" films - wall-to-wall fucking and plenty of titty, grist for the masturbation mill. Any excuse (or none at all) is a good excuse for call-girl heroine Sachiko (heroically played by Emi Kurora) to succumb to the nearest male, young or old, handsome or ugly. Little of the sex is graphic, due to Japanese censorship restrictions, but that doesn't preclude a ridiculously copious cum-shot (seen from behind) nor some fairly brutal roughing up of Sachiko, a common practice in Japanese erotic culture, disturbing to many of us. Russ Meyer was one of the pioneers of generic pseudo-art-house jerk-off trash half a century ago, quaintly sweet stuff for the most part (I believe he originated the term "Nudie Cutie"). Meike and writer Takao Nakano intersperse the sex with some sci-fi and spy genre hi-jinks but that's not new either - recall the likes of Modesty Blaise in the Sixties and James Bond vehicles ever since. Some of the zanier touches concern George W. Bush's detached finger which threatens to start a nuclear holocaust if Sachiko can't stop it. Bush provides grotesque comedy here, just as he does in real life. Sachiko acquires superhero powers when a bullet enters her brain, stimulating mathematical genius and triggering cloak and dagger escapades while the fate of the world is at stake; with plenty of time off for fucking. Make love, not war? Alas, this summary of Glamorous Life hints of a flick far more clever than it really is. In fact, it comes across as little more than a film school project of a couple of horny frat boys. May that advisory serve as warning or recommendation, depending on your own personal sensibilities. |
