2007 Seattle Dyke March to include rally, dance
2007 Seattle Dyke March to include rally, dance
"...[T]his year's event is on track to be one of the best ever."

by Lisa Wardle - SGN Staff Writer

A lot of planning and fund-raising goes into the Seattle Dyke March from laboring women who desire an event that will make a difference in the future of Queer Seattleites. There are always issues arising in this city of concern to lesbians, and people need to be aware of them. Every year, on the Saturday evening before the Pride Parade, Dykes make a party out of their activist efforts and share stories about the issues and work that they have accomplished throughout the year.

The rally and march have always promoted the idea of a more political side to Gay Pride than Sunday's Parade. Since its inception in 1993, the annual Seattle Dyke March has been an event where Queer females gather to advocate for equal treatment and celebrate Dyke Pride exclusively. The event regularly hosts several speakers from activist groups to address the crowd before marching.

The theme for this year's Seattle Dyke March is "Activism on the Personal Level" to acknowledge leaders who have helped to achieve recent domestic partnership rights in Washington State. Headline speakers include Charlene Strong, Sarah Luthens, and Seattle City Council member Sally Clark. There will also be members from the Lesbian Archives, Northwest Network, Equal Rights Washington, Dyke Community Activists, and Verbena-all organizations that work to provide services and equal treatment of Queer women and are an essential part of the Dyke community.

The rally brings an opportunity to connect Lesbians from all around the area, sharing Pride through the diversity of drag kings, femmes, bull Dykes, and everyone in between. "The Dyke March is a chance for Dykes from across the city and the entire region to reconnect with each other and promote Dyke visibility while listening to some great music and speakers," said spokeswoman Whitney Fraser, who has helped to organize the march for five years. "Thanks to our fantastic organizing team, this year's event is on track to be one of the best ever."

The rally will start at the Seattle Central Community College's Plaza (Broadway & Pine) at 5 p.m., on Saturday, June 23rd, with speakers and performers emceed by Lamar Van Dyke. At 7 p.m. the march will step off on a circular route around Capitol Hill, ending back at Broadway & Pine, where the Dyke Community Activists have organized a "Dance under the Stars" to go until 10:00 p.m.

All dykes are welcome and encouraged to attend. The rally will be ASL-interpreted and a bus with a wheelchair lift and van will be provided for Dykes who want to use them during the march. A separate smoking area will be designated as well. Please, refrain from using strong fragrances so that the event may be comfortable for people with sensitive noses.
