Pilots Claim 'B' Division Crown, Rockets Earn World Series Berth
By Nick Bowen
The Seattle Pilots in their first season in the Emerald City Softball league took first place in the Open 'B' division edging out the Shock by a half game. The Shock who beat the Sting early in the day faced the Pilots whose bats came in red hot after a 22-2 game vs. the Arsenal squad. This left the Pilots a half game behind the Shock, with their final game of the season against each other to decide the division winner and the guaranteed berth to the World Series in October. The Pilots led by Darrin B. showed their solid defense and allowed only two runs in their first game, then allowed the hard hitting Shock only seven runs. Darrin led the team at the plate as well with 2 home runs on the day to lead the Pilots to a 17 - 7 win over the Shock and a ticket to the World Series in Arizona.
The rest of the Open 'B' division will battle it out for a second berth in a tournament style event on Sunday July 29th.
The Open 'D' division saw the Rockets also punch their ticket to the World Series with an impressive win against the Wolves to run their record to a perfect 14 - 0. The Wolves took an early 7 - 0 lead in the first inning, but the Rockets bats came alive and they scored 8 in the bottom half of the inning all with 2 outs to take the lead, and they never looked back. They won the game by a final score of 25 - 10, and will head back to the World Series for the second time in three years.
In other 'D' division action the Throttle came up big with their second win of the year by 12 - 6 over the Atomic, and a one run loss to the Pirates. The Pirates came back from a tough loss last week to win both of their games this weekend against the Throttle and a convincing 10 - 5 win over the Atomic.
The Open 'C' division had some great play as well with the play of the week in the division turned in by Rock from the Alley Cats. Rock had an all-star performance on Sunday, catching every ball in left centerfield and hitting the ball very well against the Maulers. He topped of the day by starting off the triple play for his team. With runners at first and second, a low fly ball was hit very short to left center field. Rock ran for the ball, which looked like a sure base hit, caught it just before it hit the ground on the edge of his glove for out number one, swiftly threw the ball to second to catch the base runner off the bag for out number two. The second baseman made the turn back to first base to catch the runner who also left base on what had appeared to be a sure single, completing the triple play!
In other 'C' action the Bulldogs Jeremy F. turned in a stellar game at shortstop in the field and followed it up with a great performance at the plate leading the Bulldogs to wins over the Dragons and the Brewers to take a share of second place with one weekend of play left. Meanwhile the Maulers went 2-0 this weekend as well, winning their match up with the Alley Cats 13 - 8, and then beating the Dragons 21 - 8. They've been playing great ball, and have beaten the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the last two weekends.
With one weekend of regular season games remaining the teams will be trying to make statements going into the World Series 'extra berth' tournament on July 29th.
