Where It's At
Jeff Hanson's sweet falsetto vocals and guitar-led songs are a golden combination at El Corazon
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Jeff Hanson w/ opening acts
Saturday, August 4 - 5pm
El Corazon - $8

It's hard to believe that Jeff Hanson's music isn't played overhead at our nearest Starbucks. It's mellow, it's acoustic, and it has a sophisticated singer-songwriter element that would go nicely with a tall, foamy single latte. But like so many worthy musicians out there on smaller labels, Hanson's soothing and brilliant songs go unheard by the masses. It's a shame, really. The Minnesota-based artist, signed to Northwest indie label Kill Rock Stars, has developed somewhat of a cult following however - he's even had his music, like "Hiding Behind the Moon", played on hit television series such as Nip/Tuck. Still, he's hardly known.

Unique to Hanson is his upper-register vocals, which has confused some into thinking he's a she. Let the truth be told, the voice belongs to a very talented gentleman. Thus far, Hanson has released two albums, 2003's Son and 2005's self-titled effort. No official word on his upcoming project can be confirmed at this time, but I anticipate he'll put out new material within the next twelve months. Hanson is often compared to Elliott Smith, Simon and Garfunkel, the Everly Brothers, and Nick Drake. Make your own comparisons by logging onto his MySpace page, www.myspace.com/jeffhanson and ear-sample tracks, primarily the cut "This Time It Will". He'll likely perform this number when he headlines a concert at El Corazon on Saturday afternoon. You can also purchase his songs on iTunes.

Saturday's performance by Jeff Hanson is much anticipated by those of us who've been waiting for him to come to Seattle for months. To be completely honest, I'm more excited about seeing Hanson in concert this weekend than trekking to Vancouver Gay Pride. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to lounge poolside after the parade - but I've been anxiously counting down the days to see this artist perform live in Seattle because he's one of America's best unheralded singer-songwriters. With opening acts, Hanson should hit the stage around 6:30pm on Saturday, and admission is only $8 at the door. It'll be a quiet concert, yet it's sure to deliver many chills. Those beautiful falsetto vocals coupled with soft guitar strokes will make a glorious one-two punch at El Corazon, located beneath the Denny Bridge. Support the Gay bars along the way. A. Rodriguez
