Are you daffy over your Dachshund? Wacky about your Whippet? Bonkers for your Belgian Tervuren? Then start working on that adorable Yorkie-size Ninja outfit or get five other 4-legged friends together for a canine version of the Village People and dog-trot over to Volunteer Park this Sunday, Aug. 19, 3pm, cause the Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey Of St. Joan are presenting Woofstock '07!
Inspired by the 1982 Castro Dog Show presented by the Mother House in San Francisco as one of the very first AIDS fundraisers, Novice Sister Isabella Ringing combined the traditional love Gay folks have for their doggies and the 37th anniversary of the little get-together at Max Yasgur's farm and conceived this Gathering Of The Species to benefit The Humane Society's Pet Project. For the critter-less, Pet Project helps folks with HIV and other debilitating diseases keep their fuzzy buddies with donated services and supplies, matching clients with volunteers who do everything from taking Boots to the vet to taking Sadie and Tigger for walks in Cal Anderson.
Besides a costume contest (for the dogs, that is), and booths with information on pet care and goodies for your spoiled bitch, there will be entertainment-the Sisters couldn't get Skinny Puppy, 3 Dog Night, or Toto, but they did get Mark 'Mom' Finley /Cruella DeVil as emcee, joined by various members of The Abbey (expect at least one tribute to Lady And The Tramp-it is a family show, after all). The Sisters would love for Woofstock to become an annual Puppy-palooza, so even if you're a cat person, come on down and howl!
