Central Area Community Festival
August 18th and 19th
Garfield Community Center
(23rd and Cherry)
I know people (and I include myself in that number), who wait all year for the Central Area Community Festival, because there they can sample real soul food, particularly the fabulicious strawberry shortcake that one of the vendors brings every year. And yes, the food is one reason to attend this multi-ethnic community-based festival, but it's also a great place to find out more about the Capitol Hill/Central Area neighborhood and meet your neighbors who live here.
Sponsored by SeaFair and a number of city offices, the fair has changed dates this year, so as not to have to compete with The Bite of Seattle, which should bring in more people. At least this is the hope of the organizers and vendors.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and going until 8 p.m., then on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the festival presents a variety of musical acts from the area, including a gospel offering to kick off Sunday's festivities.
And believe me, the crowds are not as daunting as either The Bite, or Bumbershoot, so you should come out and enjoy some great food, good music and a leisurely time with neighbors this weekend. Also, the event is free to the public.
