Elton: The Biography chronicles the highs, lows and all-around success of a legendary star
Elton: The Biography chronicles the highs, lows and all-around success of a legendary star
The Rocket Man turns 60 and his success is still orbiting after a 40-year career

CHICAGO: With over 250 million records sold and more than 50 Top 40 hits, Elton John is undeniably one of the most successful stars in the history of popular music. Known for his wild costumes, garish glasses and outspoken personality, the Rocket Man has become a legend in the music and celebrity world.

Elton: The Biography (Chicago Review Press, October 2007) by music journalist David Buckley is a fresh and contemporary look at one of pop's most established, admired and accomplished stars. Few artists have experienced the kind of life and career that Elton John has, and author Buckley meticulously outlines every detail of John's life from the moment he learned to play piano at age three, to the wild success of such hits as "Bennie and the Jets," "Crocodile Rock" and "Your Song."

Elton utilizes many new first-hand interviews with John's associates and closest musical collaborators, as well as extensive secondary research to present an enlightening portrait of a beloved and popular personality. Author Buckley wisely provides two sides to each story or controversy, such as the scandalous headlines in the tabloids about John's sexuality in the late 1980s, and his own libel lawsuits that followed in retaliation.

Elton reveals the tumultuous history of the performer, providing not only musical and industry history, but fascinating and illuminating personal history as well. Buckley frankly discusses John's battles with cocaine, alcohol, bulimia and compulsive spending, and the triumphs over each addiction he faced. The public obsession with his sexuality and failed marriage are closely examined, as well as his life as an activist in support of AIDS research and development.

Recently celebrating his 60th birthday and the release of his latest greatest-hits album, and still headlining the "Red Piano" show at Caesar's Palace casino in Las Vegas, Elton remains a strong force in the music industry. Elton is a compelling look at a pop star whose career has been as colorful as the star himself.

David Buckley is the author of several books, including R.E.M. Fiction: An Alternative Biography; Strange Fascination: David Bowie-The Definitive Story; The Stranglers: No Mercy-The Authorized and Uncensored Biography; and The Thrill of It All: The Story of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music.
