Britney flubs at VMAs, White Stripes cancel Seattle dates, James Blunt's new album out soon, no Timberlake concert review after all

Britney's "comeback": booze, onstage blandness, backstage crying
We love to watch stars rise and fall. But the career derailment of Britney Spears isn't so funny anymore. Okay, I admit to laughing at her continuing guffaws. Yet, I felt completely sorry for her when she bit the dust at MTV's VMA ceremony last weekend in Las Vegas. Was she trying out for the Pussycats Dolls junior varsity squad? Was she channeling an amateur stripper on karaoke night? Furthermore, what's a mother of two doing wearing panties and a bra in front of a national audience? Shameful. Forgettable. Wrong. But fucking hilarious! I haven't stopped laughing since! Ms. Spears, who wooed us with pop gems like "Toxic" and "Oops&I Did It Again", gave a flat-out boring and lifeless performance at MTV's big bash that left audience members puzzled and giggling. Reports of Britney partying like a sorority girl on spring break (what's new?) surfaced post-awards show. Also surfacing were reports that the bra-and-panties clad mother of two sobbed backstage following her jaw-gasping routine. Then, she rebounded over drinks (what's new?) and taquitos at a Mexican restaurant with her posse. If her music career should indeed tank, Britney might consider venturing into comedy. She's a natural at bloopers.

The White Stripes cancel Seattle concerts, US tour due to illness
If you're holding a ticket for either of The Whites Stripes shows in Seattle at the end of September, you're now $40 richer. The bad news, however, is that you won't be seeing the alternative rock darlings in concert anytime soon. The Grammy-winning duo canceled all US tour dates due to Meg White's recent illness, diagnosed as "acute anxiety". Tickets for the scrapped Paramount Theatre concerts, to have taken place on September 26 and 27, can be refunded at the point of purchase only. A "get well" message to The Whites Stripes was sent to the band's publicist on behalf of the Seattle Gay News. We do hope for a speedy recovery and rescheduled dates in the coming months. Until then, check out the pair's latest album Icky Thump at a store near you.

Blunt's sophomore effort set for release next week
Did I mention that when I met James Blunt backstage at the Paramount Theatre last year there was a woman who asked him to sign the upper portion of her breast? He refused politely. And I refused to be anywhere near her because she was cramping my style. Blunt did approve of a gift I took for him, a T-shirt with a naughty reference on it. He's very dreamy in-person. And he's equally dreamy on disc, as in 2005's superb debut Back to Bedlam. Fans of the British hottie should have September 18 circled on their calendar. This is when Blunt's sophomore offering, All the Lost Souls, hits traditional and online music stores. The initial single is "1973" and it can be ear-sampled at www.myspace.com/jamesblunt. No tour dates have been announced yet, though I'm assuming Blunt will make a US-major city run later this year or early 2008. At press time, I had not received my advance copy of All the Lost Souls. So, I can't comment on how good or bad it is. What I can say is that James Blunt is sporting a full beard these days. Mucho sexy.

Timberlake's label denies concert tickets to print media, alas no SGN review
Were you expecting a concert review for Justin Timberlake? Me too. It was one of the concerts I was most looking forward to this summer. Sadly, I got word late last week that his record label would not be accommodating print media to his Tacoma Dome appearance on September 8. Why? Beats me. But it's customary for record labels to honor print media requests for most shows, even the biggies like U2, The Rolling Stones, and Josh Groban. Even the daily newspapers, The Seattle Times and Seattle P-I, were without tickets to JT's much-anticipated performance. By no means am I bitter, perhaps a tad disappointed. I just feel bad that Seattle Gay News wasn't able to provide coverage of the pop star's concert. Next time, we'll just have to sneak our way in on the catering truck. Timberlake won several MTV VMA trophies on Sunday night, much to the chagrin of rapper Kanye West who went home empty-handed. And, pissed.
