LGBT Center to join Capitol Hill Artwalk The sun sets earlier and earlier with each passing day&the air is turning crisp and cool, and the browning leaves are easily set adrift with each passing gust of wind. As the nights lengthen, the children of the dark and their brethren delight in increased opportunities to make mischief; to tease and taunt the dwellers of the day. They make their scribbles and jots and dribble their paints and dyes, and smear themselves with clay, and weld and forge the metals of the earth, and make visual merriment to transfix the eye and bewitch the soul&it is autumn now and time for autumnal things&a time to retreat to the inner worlds of fantasy and fear&a time to prepare ourselves for the ultimate encounter with these odd creatures of the night, these beings from other worlds, these sprites and daemons and sporish mutants from beyond&it is time to steel oneself for an invasion of these creatures, these.&Vampire Pixies From Uranus!! QArts, the arts committee of the Seattle LGBT Community Center is proud to present, Vampire Pixies From Uranus, the October group art show in the Center Gallery at 1115 E Pike Street running from October 1st thru the 31st. Twenty LGBTQ artists and their friends have created works of painting, sculpture and photography in celebration of the worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Slithery, serpentine monsters, winged angelic deities, tortured racks of bones and space ships out of a Flash Gordon serial are just a few of the images you'll encounter on the walls of the Center's Gallery during the month. "I wanted to do a fun, Halloween themed show for October," says QArts Committee Chair and Curator Michael Strangeways, "but I couldn't decide which genre, sci-fi, fantasy or horror to go with, so it seemed to make sense to give the artists the opportunity to pick and choose the ones they wanted to use. And since some of them chose to mix the genres, I think we'll have some very original and amusing AND horrifying pieces of art to enjoy this month." "And I'm very pleased that we have 13 new artists showing with us this month, including painters Lexington Alexander, Cash, Tom Harshbarger, Julie Luke, Kim McBride, Kerri McGar, Quatre, Brandon Shea, Mary Miller Tyers and a collaborative work from Marius + Matt. Alex Ruhe and Stacy Schonhardt will have both paintings AND sculptural pieces on display and both of them have come up with some very intense pieces. Alex's brilliant welded pieces look like they could have been used on one of the Saw films, but as Alex points out, he's been making these incredible pieces long before those films ever made it to a cinema! They're beautiful and scary and definitely not pieces you'd want to touch; they're sharp!" Strangeways is also quick to point out that several QArts alums will also be participating this month including Michelle Salazar, Tennessee Loveless, Chris Zeigler, Pam Drago and as this press release was being written, a few more artists were asking to come on board as well. "It looks like we should have at least 20 artists participating in this show, and with each artist, on average, having at least two or three pieces, this will be a big show for us, with close to 50 pieces of art on display." The opening reception for Vampire Pixies From Uranus will be held on Saturday, October 6th, from 7pm to 10pm at the Seattle LGBT Community Center. Most of the artists will be on hand for a meet and greet and the majority of the art in the show will be for sale. Appropriately themed music of the macabre will be provided, as well as appropriately ghoulish drinks and snacks. Admission is free but donations are always welcome. A raffle will also be held, featuring work of some of the artists, to help raise funds for QArts with tickets going for $1 a piece. A similar raffle was held at the April show which raised over $100 for the organization. AND, after months of promises, QArts t-shirts will be for sale with the profits going towards creating new QArts events and activities. QArts is also pleased to announce that they will begin monthly participation in the Capitol Hill Artwalk starting on Tuesday, October 9th from 5pm to 8pm at the Center with complimentary beverages and snacks and some of the artists present.
