By Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium Directed by Zach Helms Starring Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Bateman And Zach Mills Opens Friday, November 16 Maybe it's the times we live in, but it doesn't seem like there's a lot of really good holiday films this year. In fact, a tradition started some years ago with 'Silent Night, Deadly Night', is continuing, with more and more slasher/fright flicks coming out around the holidays. Still, there are some films worth seeing, that may give you some hope in this the dark time of the year, and one of those is 'Mr. Magorium's Emporium'. Starring the inimitable Dustin Hoffman in perhaps his most whimsical role, 'Mr. Magorium's Emporium' is a delight from start to finish, and also starring Natalie Portman (who stars as a shy girl, who is trying to 'unstick' her life) and Jason Bateman (as an uptight accountant), it's a good allegory too. In fact, with plenty of grand special effects and lots of color, this film should be perfect for those who find themselves babysitting kids this season, or for those looking for something to make them feel like kids again. The film centers around the magical toy store of the title, and how after Mr. Magorium (Hoffman) decides it's time for him to leave, the store starts having a 'temper tantrum'. In the middle of this magical change is his young apprentice, the manager of the store (Portman), who is none to happy that her boss is leaving the store to her. There's also the young boy who believes more in magic than this winsome girl does, and far more than the straitlaced accountant (Jason Bateman and as the boy, Zach Mills) accountant, who Magorium calls 'mutant'. All of these subplots make for a grand tale of adventure very much like 'ET' or 'Stardust', which should please fans of such genres, as well as those looking for a lighthearted escape from holiday stress. Trust me, this film'll do you good. |
