A CHORUS LINE
CONCEIVED BY MICHAEL BENNETT
DIRECTED BY STAN GILL
SECONDSTORY REPERTORY
THROUGH DECEMBER 1

This musical is one of the longest-running productions in the history of Broadway musicals. Maybe that's because so many people can relate to the feelings of the cast as they sing about "hoping to get this job" and "needing this job." It's universal, even if we aren't dancers trying out for a Broadway show.

The music is wonderful and memorable, but the script is hard to manage, with spurts of singing, dancing energy followed by some flat moments of storytelling when it's just one person's story. This production at SecondStory Rep is full of energetic young singer/dancers. They handle the script well, but they're still unable to overcome those flat parts.

Stan Gill creates some nice bits as Robert Falk's lighting emphasizes who is supposed to be singing what's in his or her heart while darkening areas where the action is continuing. Stan Gill's creative mirrored set allows for the mirrors to be turned so they're not constantly staring the audience in the face.

The musicians, directed by Cathy Domeck, do a great job with the songs and the interludes, but sound does become a problem when the unamplified singers aren't quite loud enough to overcome the music. If the musicians trust their music will be heard and can quiet their instruments a bit, they would allow the singers to be heard more clearly.

Most of the show is singing and choreography. Everyone does a great job with choreography by Kasey Nusbickel, Stephanie Farhood, Mary Jansen and Shari Lewis. The choreography for the individual dances matches nicely with the dancers' capabilities.

Overall, this is an enjoyable production. The quality of the performers is more on the "fair" side, with many not able to sustain singing exactly on tune. It is a very hard task to find the triple threats this show demands. Some will be better at one of the three areas, and maybe not as accomplished in the others. All the performers clearly sing and dance their hearts out, and they should get points for effort.
