Scissor Sisters new concert DVD, Wolfmother in the studio, buzz on Enter Shikari

SCISSOR SISTERS GO WILD, SHOW SKIN ON CONCERT DVD
Predominantly Gay glam-pop ensemble Scissor Sisters have been relatively quiet in 2007, at least stateside they have. In the UK, they've been kicking their heels in the air one night at a time. The multiple Brit Award winners have just put on a live DVD titled Hurrah: A Year of Ta-Dah that includes a 90-minute performance at London's 02 Arena. The concert, in front of 20,000 screaming fans this summer, features dazzling stage décor complete with a scissors-shaped runway. Lead singer, former Seattleite and naughty boy Jake Shears manages to strip down to a pair of very skimpy, glittery panties by show's end. Then, in Shears fashion, he moons the audience. On the subject of naughtiness - or just plain raunchiness - Shears and Ana Matronic mimic a fellatio act during a number. What I loved about the Scissor Sisters DVD besides its over-the-top camp and sexual shenanigans was that the entire performance is captured without interruption - other live DVDs go from venue to venue, but this concert feels like you're right there from start to finish.

The extras on Hurrah: A Year of Ta-Dah include a fabulous, lengthy 'year in the life' of Scissor Sisters during their extensive "Kiss You Off" world tour. Shears again strips, even appears to whip out his you-know-what (unfortunately, it's blurred). Del Marquis (who interviewed with Seattle Gay News in 2004) is shown backstage squeezing into super tight outfits and displaying his pecs all over the place. Babydaddy, the bearish hunk of the NYC-based quintet, appears reading a newspaper and complaining of his brief airtime on music videos. Paddy, the lone straight member of Scissor Sisters, is told quite frankly by a European TV host, "you are the Gayest." Other highlights include Shears rolling around in a puddle of mud, Yoko Ono taking pictures with the band, and a tribute to Anna Nicole Smith. For any Scissor Sisters fan, stuff their stocking with something big and fruity: a new Scissor Sisters DVD.

WOLFMOTHER IN THE STUDIO, RELEASES LIVE DVD
Grammy-winning trio Wolfmother is in the recording studio, finishing their sophomore effort and follow-up to their acclaimed self-titled debut (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2006). The Australian threesome (who interviewed with Seattle Gay News in the spring of last year, long before they won that Grammy) will undoubtedly make a 2008 appearance in Seattle, seeing we were completely left off their mini-US tour this summer. Meanwhile, the psychedelic rock group has released a live DVD titled Please Experience Wolfmother. The performance was filmed in their hometown of Sydney. I've watched my personal copy at least a dozen times, although it doesn't compare to seeing the band in person. Stay glued to "The Music Lounge" in the coming months for updated information on Wolfmother, including Seattle tour dates.

UK ROCKERS ENTER SHIKARI TURN CHOP SUEY INTO JUNGLE GYM, SAY HELLO OFFSTAGE
I attended Sunday's night Enter Shikari concert at Chop Suey, and am still trying to figure out what I saw and heard. The UK act, promoting their debut Take to the Skies, combines equal parts electronica and punk for a sound that can't be described in words. It almost felt like a discotheque gone edgy with the half-filled venue bouncing up and down in unison. Bassist Chris Batten dangled from the stage rafters, while lead singer Rou Reynolds danced in the pit. Enter Shikari certainly has a lot of energy, matched with the same amount of potential. If the electronica-punk sound extends beyond a fad, these guys have a shot. Enter Shikari dined at Elysian Pub before the show, two tables away from my friend and I, but it wasn't until after the concert that band members came forward to introduce themselves. Batten, sweaty and sexy, told me the group was a bit "reserved" on this night and insisted he doesn't have a six pack, giving me an excuse to stare at his torso and waistline. He also said he had a salad for dinner, which took our conversation in an odd and boring direction. Rory Clewlow (guitar) recognized me from the Elysian and mentioned he was taking a one-night sabbatical from beer guzzling, and I slept through the rest of our discussion because I was buzzed. Anyway, these guys are adorable and loud, and contrary to my belief - they really are old enough to drink.

BEST OF MUSIC 2007 CHOICES REVEALED NEXT WEEK
"The Music Lounge" won't print next week due to our Best of Music 2007 special coverage. It will resume on December 21. Speaking on behalf of our music team at Seattle Gay News, this is our favorite issue of the entire year. We look forward to it in the weeks and months leading up to it. Just last week, Richard Kennedy, Jessica Browning and I discussed our year-end selections over dinner and wine, and I think you'll find some great and surprising choices on our lists. Going with tradition, I'm picking the year's best albums and singles, and we choose the year's hottest artists and worst music collectively. Individually, we pick our top ten live performances of the past twelve months. Also included in our year-end coverage is an exclusive artist interview with Simian Mobile Disco. I invite you to grab a copy of the Seattle Gay News on December 14 and celebrate with us the Best of Music 2007.
