Hike in the winter? You bet!
Hike in the winter? You bet!
by Martin Fight - SGN Contributing Writer

It may be wintertime in the Northwest, but that should not dampen your desire to get out of the house, condo or apartment and spend a day outdoors among the natural wonders of Puget Sound - and meet some other Gay guys, too. "Hike in the winter?" you ask. Ya sure, ya betcha! It's the perfect time to begin exercising that will assist you to look and feel your best come the spring and summer months.

While the Seattle Gay Hiking Group does not hike during the winter months to Cascade Mtn destinations such as Gothic Basin, Lake 22, Silver Peak, Poodle Dog Pass, Kendall Katwalk, the Palisades, Bare Mtn, or Panorama Point - we save those for the Summer and Autumn hikes - we do hike to many other Puget Sound locations. Our winter hikes (some maybe considered walks) to Oyster Dome with its sweeping views of Samish Bay, to Mt. Walker and its views of Hood Canal, Mt. Sugarloaf/Mt. Aerie and their views of Whidbey Island, Ft. Casey and Ebeys Landing with panoramic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Libby Point, Rattlesnake Ridge, Pt. Defiance, Ft. Warden/Pt. Townsend, the Interurban Trail and Lummi Island are only a small sampling of many scenic and interesting destinations that await you until spring arrives and the Cascade Mtn trails are snow free. These lowland hikes are relatively easy, not very lengthy, but they all are interesting in their own right. In addition, the conversation while hiking with other Gay guys, more than makes up for any lack of excitement the trail may provide.

"What about the rain?" you ask. Well, the SGHG has a knack for finding hiking locations within the rain shadow of Puget Sound - typically somewhere on Whidbey Island, Fidalgo Island or Guemes Island. We have been out on the trails since 1967 - so we do have some experience under our belt. If it happens to rain, umbrellas magically appear from inside our backpacks. Like the Boy Scouts of America - we are prepared. However, since it does not rain every Sunday in the winter, we also hike in southern Puget Sound areas to locations such as Budd Inlet, Mima Mounds, Nisqually Basin, South Prairie, and even a place called Adnar.

So, are you ready to experience and enjoy winter hiking in Puget Sound? Sure you are and the Seattle Gay Hiking Group welcomes you to experience what we do each Sunday - rain or shine! We meet in the Uptown Espresso, on the NE corner of Republican and Westlake (SLUT stop: Terry & Mercer or Westlake & Mercer), leaving at 9:00 a.m. We are not an organized group. There are no membership dues to pay. We're basically Gay guys interested in going for a day hike and having fun doing it. Get yourself out of the house, condo, or apartment to enjoy the outdoors and meet some new and interesting folks. Our website address:
