| Videophile closing it's doors after 25 years |
by Rod Parke -

One of Seattle's oldest Gay-owned businesses is closing. After 25 years of providing the best formats available, Videophile is selling its entire inventory at 50% or more off (cash and checks only), before its doors close for good on January 20th.
Far from your usual video store, Videophile has long championed both the unusual and the cutting edge in home entertainment. In fact, back in 1983, both the Seattle Gay News and the Seattle P-I featured owners Court Attinger and Jess Burton in articles about the newest video formats, namely Laser Discs and the short-lived RCA CED system. With the widest selection of disc titles in the Seattle area, both movie aficionados and those seeking less mainstream items like opera or animé films flocked to the original Videophile in The Broadway Arcade, and later to the larger facilities at the old Standard Records store on NE 65th.
Court, who passed away last year, was a true champion of the best that home video could offer. Those of us who bought those early laser disc machines and were quick to jump on the DVD bandwagon valued a kindred spirit in Court. He not only offered the best selection of operas and the entire Criterion catalogue at 20% off retail, but was also eager for customer input about the best versions to stock.
When I heard about the 50% off sale, I dashed down to the store across NE 65th from Roosevelt Square and was amazed at the selection still available. Hundreds of movies were only $5, and most operas were $15. In addition to the main stock of DVD's, there were also many laser discs. And the bins of $5 movie DVD's and $10 Animé films took forever to browse.
Videophile is at 1028 NE 65th; telephone 206 522-3035. Hours: 10am to 7pm. Closed Mondays.
