Gay Spokane escort charged with extorting state legislator
Cody Castagna, 27, pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of trying to extort money from former Rep. Richard Curtis after a night of sex in October. His trial is set for April 7. Prosecutors contend that Castagna, along with three other men, attempted to blackmail former Rep. Richard Curtis. Curtis, a Republican from the southwest Washington town of LaCenter, alleges he and Castagna had sex in a hotel room. Castagna then took his wallet and threatened to expose him publicly if he did not pay $1,000. Castagna has contended Curtis reneged on a promise to pay $1,000 for sex. His attorney told The Spokesman-Review newspaper he would fight the charges against his client, and that the money his client sought from Curtis was not "extortion money. It was prostitution money."
