The best Rustycon ever
The best Rustycon ever
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

The boot scootin' mixed with some hip hop moves in the Biohazard mini-party, the three costumed guys who spontaneously did a lip sync to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," and so much more made this year's Rustycon one of the best this writer has ever attended. There were more than a few "con virgins" to add to the growing membership of this, the first sci-fi convention of 2008 (and what many fans of the genre think of as the kickoff to the big convention, Norwescon, which happens every Easter weekend).

There were also a larger number of panels this year, including a roleplay by The Elan Court, one of the guests of honor at this year's convention, where folks who put on foolscap were offering audience members a costumed piece that was interesting and funny. Other panels included "Debunking Pseudoscience" and "4 Seasons - Pagans in Space," as well as a number of autograph sessions with attending writers.

As always, the masquerade - which had a few more costumed contestants than last year's Rustycon - and the Saturday night dance were the big draws. Also, there were a few more room parties this year, with live DJs keeping things bumping and shaking along, and a "slave auction" put on the International Bank of Timbuktu (no real currency, and no real slavery, just plenty of fun), which generated a lot of heat and revelry as contestants vied for the most beads and to be the one who brought the most "timbuks." Look for some of the shenanigans on a MySpace page by IBT in the near future. Unfortunately, there were complaints about the Holiday Inn, the hosting hotel, so word is Rustycon 26 will be at another hotel to be determined in the near future, so stay tuned. For more information on Norwescon, which brings together an international, multi-ethnic and multi-sexual identity fan base, go to www.norwescon.org.
