RELENTLESS HEARTACHE
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14
CAPITOL HILL ARTS CENTER
Over the past ten years, "14/48 - the world's quickest theatre festival" has produced more than 350 short new plays. The plays are developed in two 24-hour periods for two weekends in a row. First, writers, directors and actors assemble and a theme is picked out of a hat and actors and directors are assigned to a writer at random. The writers get 8 hours overnight to write a new play around the actors they have been assigned, using the theme. The next morning, the director and actors get the script and start working on the production side, and the result is performed at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. that night! Then a new theme is picked and the 24 hours starts again.
Some wildly creative and funny plays have been created this way, with surprisingly excellent results for such a short window of time. 14/48 is a very popular offering at Capitol Hill Arts Center and often sells out. This Valentine's Day, they decided to collect some of the best love stories that 14/48 has produced and sculpt them into an evening of love. The plays will feature the original directors and casts, recreating their 24-hour experience. Some of Seattle's most creative artists will join in to help and the results, this time with real rehearsals and production time, will be sure to please.
Seattle playwrights Scot Augustson, Louis Broome, Carl Sander and Wayne Rawley and directors Amy Thone, Brian Faker, Hans Altwies, Jenifer Jasper and Tina La Plant will present short plays starring Annette Toutonghi, Jodi Paul Wooster, Kerri Brown, Seanjohn Walsh, Ben Laurence, Mark Fullerton, Keira McDonald, Deniece Bleha, Ben Laurence, Peggy Poage, James Lapan, Erin Kraft, Christopher Stewart, Alan Echison, Mike Owcharuk, James Frounfelter, Dante, Bliss Kolb, Dane Wilson, Matthew Richter and Chris Spott.
Special additional material will include augmentation by a six piece band led by 14/48 veteran bandmaster Brendan Hogan, dances by Ten-Tiny guest choreographers, Crispin Spaeth and Paige Barnes, and poetry by William Butler Yeats (even though he's dead).
