BENAROYA HALL'S

Get in the mood for love before Valentine's Day this year; join Seattle Baroque Orchestra for If Music be the Food of Love, an intimate chamber program full of sensuous 17th-century love songs. From laments of love lost to exaltations of love found, murmurs of distant longing to revelations of love requited, explore some of the most beautiful baroque works composed on this most complex and coveted emotion at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall. Soprano Yulia Van Doren thrilled Seattle audiences last season in the title role of Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea. For this special SBO program, Van Doren brings operatic depth to an air from Jean-Baptiste Lully's Armide. Favorites by Purcell, including "Sweeter than Roses," "Fairest Isle," and "She loves, and she confesses, too," offer the English composer's exquisite tunefulness. Songs by Juan Hidalgo - the leading composer in 17th-century Spain - reveal portraits of Iberian passion. Pairing the sweet sounds of lute and harp, special guests Stephen Stubbs and Maxine Eilander raise the bar for continuo playing worldwide. With Seattle treasures Ingrid Matthews and Margriet Tindemans, the ensemble of four presents intricate consorts by Matthew Locke and William Lawes, lush music for viola da gamba by Marin Marais, violin virtuosity by Jean-Féry Rebel, and variations full of Spanish flair on guitar and harp by Fernandez de Huete and Santiago de Murcia.
SBO Music Director and acclaimed violinist Ingrid Matthews won first prize in the Erwin Bodky International Competition in 1989, and since then has become well established as one of today's most important Baroque violinists. Her recorded output ranges from the rich solo violin literature of 17th-century Italy to the pinnacle of the violinist's repertoire, the sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin by J. S. Bach. In addition to her work as music director of Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Ms. Matthews is a popular soloist and guest director with other ensembles, and has led the renowned Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra and the New York Collegium. She has served on the faculties of the University of Toronto, the University of Washington, Indiana University and the University of Southern California.
Seattle Baroque Orchestra comprises some of North America's most gifted period-instrument performers. Since its debut in March of 1994, SBO has received consistently rave reviews and has established itself as Seattle's premier chamber orchestra devoted to historical performance practice. The orchestra has done regional touring and has been heard across North America on several NPR broadcasts.
If Music be the Food of Love takes place on Saturday February 9 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday February 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Benaroya Hall/Nordstrom Recital Hall. Pre-concert lectures begin one hour before each performance.
