Fool's Gold
Opening February 8
Nothing like a good laugh to chase the winter blues (and memories of violent, horrid films like Untraceable) away, and the delightfully wacky romantic comedy Fool's Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, is just that movie. In fact, if you and a sweetie don't have plans for V-Day, this is a good choice to make it all warm and fuzzy.
Moving back and forth between the core plot of a mismatched, but still in love couple (McConaughey and Hudson) who are searching for a huge cache of sunken treasure and a father and daughter trying to work on their relationship (Donald Sutherland and Alexis Dzien), Fool's Gold zips along. True, there are moments when some of the more serious relationship issues between the ex-husband and ex-wife - she's recently divorced him, but they find themselves together again searching for the treasure - do threaten to bog down an otherwise fun film. Still, the laughs are plenty and the energy between McConaughey and Hudson is a joy to watch, as is the ever-magnificent Donald Sutherland (who plays a wealthy eccentric trying to figure out his none-too-bright daughter).
The best parts of the film are the absolutely hilarious interactions between Hudson, McConaughey and Donald Sutherland, who are trying to keep one step ahead of a notorious rap star/possible gangster who owns the island where the treasure is buried. Boats and people do unbelievable things - including my favorite scene, where some nutty partiers fly off their boat when they make a too-sharp turn while trying to rescue a stranded McConaughey - and there's some derring-do fight scenes underwater, and a dinner scene that will have you laughing all the way through.
As perfect a romantic comedy as Hollywood's come up with in a long time, Fool's Gold is so far my favorite film this year, and I cannot recommend it enough. Just be sure you don't sit next to some folks who have broken "laugh bones," like I did at the screening.
