Why I support Hillary Clinton
Why I support Hillary Clinton
by Janice Van Cleve - Special to the SGN

The 2008 election presents Americans with a bouquet of riches. On the Democratic side, we have a very smart, articulate woman who has weathered the worst her enemies can throw at her and who still rises to the occasion, and we have an inspired black man whose oratory has moved thousands and resurrected the image of hope. The Republican side is weakened by the failures in Iraq, the looming recession in the economy, Katrina, widespread corruption and indicted criminals, and bathroom sex scandals. Rove and DeLay are gone and unless Cheney and Bush declare martial law or commit massive election fraud, either Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama is going to be our next president.

I support Hillary for several reasons:

1. Hillary is the smartest candidate to stand for president since John F. Kennedy. Her IQ far exceeds any other candidate in this election. Time and again she has demonstrated her grasp of key issues, the interconnection of all the parts, and quick thinking on her feet.

2. Hillary is the toughest candidate in the race. She is able to weather the lies, the verbal abuse, the false charges, and the hate that her enemies have thrown at her. She stood strong against the right wing attacks on her health care plan, her real estate business in the Whitewater development, changing the White House travel staff, and smears of carpetbagging when she ran for senator of New York. She stood by her man even when he cheated on her and demonstrated the strength not only to hold herself up proud, but to rehabilitate him. Contrast that to John Kerry who stood like a deer in headlights, speechless, when he was swiftboated. Nor did John Edwards come to his rescue. Hillary had the intestinal fortitude not only to respond to the Monica affair herself but also to pick up her fallen husband with dignity and stateswomanship.

3. Hillary has a lock on the health care issue equal to Al Gore's lock on the environmental issue. Nobody is close to her on knowledge, practical understanding, and negotiating skill on health care. Health care is one of the top three priorities to Americans and to American business. Hillary gets it.

4. Hillary shows professional perspective in foreign affairs. While Obama threatened to invade Pakistan, causing an international upset, Hillary committed no such gaff. While Obama loosely offered to sit down and talk with the dictators and mullahs, Hillary responded she would use the proper channels of the State Department and not risk presidential capital in cowboy diplomacy. We've had enough of that already. To her discredit, Hillary voted for the Iraq invasion and subsequent funding, while Obama stood against the war right from the start.

5. Hillary rises above both Republican lies and Democratic nitpicks. While pundits lay off Obama's color they leap into Hillary's cleavage. They hang on her every tear and criticize her sharp edge. They congratulate the man who knows how to "play the game" but attack her for playing by the same rules. Through it all, she handles both the podium on national TV and the table in the New Hampshire diner with integrity, sincerity, and authenticity.

6. Hillary is a woman. While it is a proud moment in our nation's history to have a woman and a black man as candidates for president, black men and white men are still men. We need a fundamental shift in our political climate that only a woman can bring. In state after state where women have achieved numerical parity in the legislatures, laws have become more humane, inclusive, and tolerant. Justice has been served without torture or cruelty. Practical answers have been found for complex issues without pompous ego trips. Women have ruled other nations successfully, even forcefully when necessary, and their countries have been better for it. We need a woman in our own White House.
