The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas (CD Forum) proudly welcomes 2007 BESSIE Performer Award Winner Nora Chipaumire. Her solo dance performance Chimurenga debuts in Seattle Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 8 p.m. at Broadway Performance Hall. A post-show Q&A with the audience immediately follows both performances.
Nora Chipaumire's solo contemporary dance performance, Chimurenga (meaning "struggle" in the Shona language) is a trilogy that describes the personal as well as the collective trauma of surviving war/revolution in Zimbabwe. Her work is inspired by art from her native country such as Shona sculpture and chimurenga music - art that results from the often-violent convergence of rural, urban, African, non-African, cultural, economic, colonial and technological ideas. A visionary African contemporary dance artist, her work speaks to the human condition with power, authority, and urgency.
As a dancer, Nora has worked with various companies, including Molissa Fenley and Dancers (NYC); Dimensions Dance Theater (Oakland, CA); Compania De La Danza Narciso Medina (Havana, Cuba); and for 3 years a featured dancer with the world renowned Urban Bush Women. She also has had the privilege of working with esteemed San Francisco bay area choreographers such as Thais Mazur, Anne Bluthenthal, Laura Eleaine Ellis, Robert Moses, Mary Amentrout, Leyya Tawil, and New York based, Crystal Brown.
