What I meant to say is....
Oh, Sally!

"Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it's the death knell of this country."
- Sally Kern, OK State Representative

Dear Representative Sally Kern:

I wanted to write to thank you for speaking out recently. I, for one, will not ask you to be quiet. I found your recent comments to be most useful and I believe the whole world should hear them. Please continue to speak freely and loudly.

As a Gay man, I believe your comments will have the same effect as similar comments in the past, such as when Pat Buchanan famously called AIDS the retribution of God against Gays or when Dr. Laura Schlesinger famously called homosexuality a "biological error."

"I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat."
- Sally Kern, OK State Representative

After all, it is comments like yours that really make a difference. People don't so much remember the comments of the tolerant or the peaceful as much they remember the comments of the radical and frightening. I believe your words will stick in the minds of people and remind everyone how far away from your point of view they are. It is people like you that help our country move toward tolerance the most. For that, I am most grateful.

"Gays are infiltrating city councils."
- Sally Kern, OK State Representative

As the wife of a Baptist Minister and a representative for a very conservative district, you surely never intended to help the country toward tolerance. In your mind, our country should wake up and recognize the dangerous agenda of Gay people before it is too late, before we take over city councils! But then, that's precisely where you misjudged your own power. Slowly, but without a doubt, most people are seeing homosexuality for the harmless difference it is. When every family has a Gay uncle or sister or cousin, your labeling of those people as "dangerous" seems like a gross, dimwitted exaggeration. When people hear or read your words, they can't help but see how radical and ridiculous your point of view is in relation to all that is normal.

"They're going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.
- Sally Kern, OK State Representative

So, thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking out. In all my years in fighting for equality for Gay folks, I have a feeling I'll never accomplish as much as you have in a single sentence. For that, I am most grateful. And I encourage all of my friends to write you at sallykern@okhouse.gov so that they can thank you as well.

Sincerely, Beau Burriola
