Enough, McGreevey!
by Beau Burriola - SGN Foreign Correspondent

This is the story of the man who couldn't get enough.

In the time after former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey came out of the closet and resigned after a Gay affair, he became a regular Gay rock star. With appearances and attention across the Gay community and the country, and even a stint on Oprah, his exploits were celebrated and he became a household name. Proud of it or not, it was our fascination with him that filled his pockets and made him famous.

So, with all he's gained from the Gay community up until now, perhaps he will forgive us if this week's revelations from an ex-driver (that the driver, Teddy Pedersen, engaged in threeways with his wife and the former ex-governor) are just one piece of information too much. Forgive us if we feel like this is just another book in the making, another step toward another tabloid headline to catapult Mr. McGreevey back into the sight of a public that has moved on to other, bigger gubernatorial sex scandals. Forgive us if we just don't care about Jim McGreevey anymore.

"We need to move on with our lives," Mr. McGreevey said in a written statement after the most recent drama twist, explaining how he had removed mention of the incidents in early drafts of his book. At the same time he said this, nobody was removing his book, The Confession, off the shelves. Move on?

"For all our sakes," Mr. McGreevey continued, "particularly our daughter, we need to close this chapter and look toward the future." Cynical observers might wonder how the McGreevey Wealth and Publicity Tour was so good for their daughter. If Mr. McGreevey wanted privacy, he sure went about it in a funny way by milking his situation for all he could, "closing the chapter" by writing a book. If all the attention he is coyly rejecting and then sucking up like a flooding drainpipe is annoying to the former governor, he only has to thank his own marketing.

In a way, the feeling of "too much" we feel about Jim McGreevey is a sign of just how mainstream Gay folks have become. We are normal enough to have the same exhausting political scandals as straight folks. We are common enough to have messy, media-frenzied divorce proceedings. We are scandalous enough to have our self-imposed dramas splashed across the covers of tabloids. In the era of political sex scandals, we're really nothing special.

In a more fundamental way, though, in a way that isn't Gay or straight, it's a sad sign of the times that those least worthy of our time, money and attention will always get it, just by being tragic and tasteless.

"I still hope Dina and I can resolve our issues privately," Mr. McGreevey concluded publicly. Yeesh.

In a world of scandals and public embarrassment, and all the wealth and fame that it brings, it's just one more story of someone who couldn't get enough of his own tawdriness. Unfortunately for us, we may never hear the end of Jim McGreevey.
