GOODBYE ISN'T ENOUGH

I'm sure I don't have any exclusivity on life crises with the deaths of my parents, sister, partner, and friends. It hasn't been easy, but I have been quite resilient considering the circumstances.

Several months ago, I received a call from the mother of a deceased friend. I had met her several times when she visited her son and we toured the city, ate out, and spent time talking together. She didn't feel upset about the lifestyle her sibling had chosen.

Truthfully I was glad to hear from her again except our usual holiday greetings. She wanted me, if possible, to help her dispose of the things in her former son's condominium plus closing out all of the legal matters.

It took us two days to complete the work. When we were finished we both sat down and cried, emotionally spent.

On the way to the airport we were silent. Nothing could erase the time we spent together trying to resolve a very difficult situation.

SORRY TO DISAGREE, BUT&

Sorry to disagree with part of Sara Michelle Fetters' review of Stop-Loss [Poignant Stop-Loss a powerful soldier's story, 3/28/08] but it definitely IS an anti-war movie. Like the best of argumentative fiction, it is subtle enough so as not to alienate audiences not previously holding the position being advocated.

The process of stop-loss itself is presented as arbitrary and unfair. The war is depicted as terrifying and killing innocent civilians. It purposelessness is clearly articulated.

However, I do agree that the guys are hot - Ryan Phillippe has graduated from pretty boy to an accomplished actor (and in one scene shows us that he's a bit of a gym rat as well).
