Palm Springs celebrates Gay marriage
Palm Springs celebrates Gay marriage
by Ed Depicolzuane - SGN Contributing Writer

As California arose to another week of business as usual June 17, and Lesbian and Gay couples arose to a historical milestone in their relationships: the state had given them the right to marry. With hundreds of couples jamming the schedules in county clerks' offices for their marriage licenses, the folks in Palm Springs decided to throw a Saturday-night party.

The Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism and the offices of Mayor Steve Pougnet (who is partnered in a Gay relationship and has twin children) arranged a community wedding and party in the middle of downtown Palm Springs. Couples were invited to be wed in the garden courtyard within the historic Spanish-styled La Plaza building, after which they enjoyed a street party with music, wedding cake, beverages and congratulations, with stories from the other newlyweds.

Fifty couples were married before 10 p.m., all officiated by the mayor, the county clerk and city council members. The atmosphere was energized as excited couples waited their turn and newlyweds emerged having realized a dream, a dream shared by so many people in society who take the right to wed for granted. Many had been together for decades, the longest 40 years. Some had children, some young and some grown. With very few exceptions, they related that their families were glad and eager that they marry and were very supportive.

These are some of that 50 in short form, their happy smiles, and their stories about why they wanted to get married, and how they and their families felt once they did.
