Jon McLaughlin, Bumbershoot, Ed Harcourt, Sarah McLachlan
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

If you watched the Academy Awards in February, and were paying attention, you should rememberJon McLaughlin. You certainly couldn't forget his gorgeous face. After performing the nominated song "So Close" from Disney's megahit Enchanted on the worldwide telecast, sales of the singer-songwriter's debut album Indiana zoomed to a 1,514 percent increase overnight on Seattle-based Amazon.com. McLaughlin appeared in the film as well, but admitted he wasn't initially supposed to be in it. His movie cameo and Oscar performance led to a career-making moment, as McLaughlin was asked to tour with Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson and platinum-selling artist Colbie Caillat. The 20-something musician finished his sophomore effort Beating My Heart and is currently on tour promoting it, arriving in Seattle at The Triple Door on July 27. And before he hits the stage, he's stopping by The Music Lounge for a one-on-one interview with me. So grab a copy of next week's issue and meet the guy behind that beautiful face, the very up-and-coming Jon McLaughlin. Tickets and information for his show next weekend can be found at www.thetripledoor.net.

The Bumbershoot lineup is now complete with the last-minute addition of Death Cab for Cutie, set to close the festival on Monday evening. Opening for the Seattle quartet is another just-announced artist, regional favorites Superchunk. To summarize, in case you've been out of the loop, the 2008 roster includes Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Band of Horses, Lucinda Williams, The Blakes, Keyshia Cole, Neko Case, Sons and Daughters, Ingrid Michaelson, Old 97's, T.I., Jakob Dylan, The Walkmen, Nada Surf, The Offspring, Paramore, Sondre Lerche, and Saul Williams, to name a few. Single-day tickets are now on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets for $35, and at all Starbucks stores on August 2. Three-day passes are also available for $80. Prices for both single-day and three-day tickets increase to $40 and $100 on August 15. I'll be at Bumbershoot all three days, blogging live from Seattle Center and hoping to catch up with a few of the performing artists. Oh, and I'll desperately be trying to stow away onboard Beck's tour bus.

Sometimes it sucks to be a music writer because there are multiple concerts on the same night you want to see. Such was the case Tuesday when Jimmy Eat World played The Showbox SoDo and Ed Harcourt performed at Chop Suey. The British singer-songwriter will hopefully return this fall or winter for another tour, but first he has a film assignment to complete. Harcourt has signed on to compose the music for S. Darko, the supernatural sequel to Donnie Darko (starring Gay heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal) that is currently in production. "I read the script and loved it, so I jumped at the opportunity", stated Harcourt on a recent press release. The acclaimed musician continues his US summer road outing through the month of July, promoting his well-received album The Beautiful Lie. Harcourt claims to have six or seven songs already written for an upcoming EP, eyeing the month of September for a street date. Check out the music video for "She Fell Into My Arms" at YouTube.

It's been 15 years since Sarah McLachlan scored a mainstream breakthrough with her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. It was McLachlan's third career recording, and even though some of us discovered her incredible music on her initial projects Touch and Solace, she didn't become a household name until Fumbling came out along with the female-motored tour Lilith Fair. Soonthereafter, Vancouver BC-based McLachlan released a live VHS accompaniment to the record entitled Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - The Home Video and a collection of demo tracks of select songs from that album called The Freedom Sessions. To mark the 15th anniversary of these projects, the Grammy-winning diva will release updated versions of all three recordings in one deluxe package on August 5. The original disc includes McLachlan favorites like "Possession," "Ice Cream," "Hold On," "Fear," and two standouts "Plenty" and "Wait," plus bonus material. Each of the discs contains extras, making it a must-have for any McLachlan fan. Personally, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy got me through some tough times - I remember listening to it over and over again in the early '90s, and to this date it remains one of my all-time cherished CDs. Pre-order a copy of it at your nearest record store, or purchase it in-person on August 5.

Next weekend is a huge weekend for live music in Seattle. The Capitol Hill Block Party takes place on South Capitol Hill, Nine Inch Nails take over Key Arena, Jon McLaughlin is at The Triple Door, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings with Marc Broussard get busy at Woodland Park Zoo, and Jay Brennan performs at The Triple Door. What I'm trying to say is, don't spend all your money this weekend, because you'll need it next weekend. I'll be traveling up to British Columbia for the Pemberton Festival, meeting up with a group of 20 journalists in Vancouver before heading to the festival site. Read daily blogs from the festival at www.seattlegayblog.blogspot.com.

Lastly, don't forget to buy tickets for Dolly Parton at WaMu Theater on August 8. It's on a Friday, so you can party all night after seeing one of country music's greatest icons and a true friend of the Gay community. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations. Don't miss the one and only Dolly Parton in Seattle two weeks from now!
