Southern Decadence
August 31 - 7 PM
The Mainstage Comedy Club

Blanche DuBois wouldn't miss the Southern Decadence Underwear Dance Party, and neither should you. The party starts with cocktails at 7 p.m., August 31. Everybody should be in their skivvies and dancing funky by 8 p.m. at The Mainstage Comedy Club.

And this party is not just for the boys. Event coordinator Patrick Donahue says, "We want women, too. It is really important that this is about our community, not one segment of our community." So strip down to your favorite teddy and come on in.

Southern Decadence: Seattle Style is a local party with a Big Easy twist. The event is sponsored by REDdrawers Funderwear and the Mainstage Comedy Club. Proceeds benefit the JC Lady Graytop Memorial Scholarship Fund, a scholarship awarded every year since 1977 by the Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire, the local chapter of the nationwide non-profit social/charitable organization. Scholarships go to students who support the Court's goals such as enhancing self-esteem, recognizing diversity, supporting personal development, and the acknowledgement of human rights. The Court hopes to encourage the pursuit of these goals and help individuals develop their potential thereby enhancing the future of the Queer community. Preference is given to students who self-identify as LGBT, members of LGBT families, or straight allies who have been strongly supportive of the LGBT community.

The original Southern Decadence is one of America's oldest Queer parties. It started 37 years ago in New Orleans when a small group of friends looking for some amusement to escape the oppressive wetness of August in the bayou threw a party, and the rest is history. Today, Southern Decadence is the largest Queer party in New Orleans (no easy feat) with the street party going full tilt around-the-clock. Donahue decided on the southern theme due to his fond memories of the original.

Donahue also coordinates the Frost My Latte fundraiser at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Pioneer Square. This event happens yearly on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Proceeds from this event also go to the JC Lady Graytop Memorial Scholarship Fund. Last year Frost My Latte bagged $2,467 for Lady Greytop. Donahue hopes to raise $3,000 through the inaugural Southern Decadence: Seattle Style Underwear Dance Party.

This is about educations, folks. Education is one of the most effective means of strengthening our community. So come in, strip down (or not), and toss back a couple of Hurricanes. It's for the students, after all.

Advance tickets are available now at The Mainstage Comedy Club, Salon Dewi, REDdrawers Funderwear, or online through Ticket Masters. Advance tickets are $10, $15 at the door.
