'90s cult icon Janeane Garofalo returns to Seattle
by Richard Kennedy - SGN A&E Writer

Janeane Garofalo
Saturday, September 13 - 8 PM
Showbox at the Market

Janeane Garofalo is somewhat of a cult icon for the '90s generation. During my college years, my friends and I fell in love with her first as a stand-up comedian - like Margaret Cho, Garofalo blazed a new trail for female comedy acts. Leaving behind stereotypical stand-up material, she covered dating, feminism and everything that Generation X could relate to in her own dry and cynical way. By the time she made the hit film Reality Bites with longtime collaborator Ben Stiller she was a Gay, Lesbian and fag-hag favorite. Her deadpan wit eventually started to incorporate her staunch political views making her less popular in a grand scope, but highly respected by those of us who have followed her career.

If you listen to AM1090, you will hear Garofalo every so often touting left-wing magazine The Nation, or speaking out for the Freedom From Religion Foundation proclaiming herself a proud atheist. There is no doubt her current tour will focus heavily on the political arena surrounding the upcoming election. It's her wit and sharp tongue that keep us coming back for more, though. She can find the perfect balance of humor that blends fittingly with her political observations.

Aside from being a huge role model for all of my straight girlfriends, she won the hearts of Gay and Lesbian fans with roles in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and Gay-themed The Laramie Project. She also scooped up an Emmy nomination a few years back for her supporting role on The Larry David Show. A couple of my friends mentioned seeing her wandering around Bumbershoot last weekend after performing with a comedy troupe called The Satiristas, who naturally focus on political hypocrisy and media distortion. When not touring, shooting movies or writing books you can catch her as a guest speaker on any number of cable news networks. She even has the balls and wherewithal to take on the so-called newshounds of Fox News!

Visit her Myspace page (www.myspace.com/imgreatjaneane) for tons of recent clips showing her various guest stints and comedy sets. Doors open at 7 p.m. for this 21+ show and tickets are $30 at www.ticketmaster.com or at The Showbox box office. Check www.showboxonline.com for any other information.

Artist Essentials:
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion is a Gay classic! Playing a brassy businesswoman, who invented a "quick-burning cigarette for the gal on the go", she returns to her reunion to terrorize all the popular girls who made her life hell. Gay guys can't help but quote her entire dialogue.

Reality Bites is the quintessential '90s Gen X flick. Her character moves her way up the managerial ladder at The Gap, relating to the generation that soon discovered their college degrees probably wouldn't take them as far as they did for their parents.
