Wildrose co-owner injured in Broadway gas pump fire |
by Nick Ardizzone -
SGN Staff Writer
An accident on Wednesday afternoon has left a Seattle woman with serious burns. At a 76 station in the 900 block of East Roy Street, a Volkswagen SUV crashed into a gas pump which then caught fire, injuring Martha Manning, 39, co-owner of the Wildrose, Seattle's only Lesbian bar. On Thursday, Seattle Gay News spoke with Shelley Bothers, who has owned the bar along with Manning for seven years.
"She had pumped gas and was getting her receipt out of the pump and, all of a sudden, the pump was just basically flying at her," Bothers said. "She said there was metal coming at her, and it was really, really hot. She saw some daylight to her right and she just went that way - I don't know if the force knocked her, but she got out of it and her pants legs and cuffs were on fire. They were doused with gasoline. She got that out, and ran back to the car to get her dog out. She got the dog out fine and got over to & where the convenience store part was, and that's when the gas tank of her car caught on fire."
"It was totally engulfed," she said. "There were 15-foot flames. & It didn't pin her against the car, which was lucky. If she'd have gotten pinned, that would have been the end of it."
The driver of the Volkswagen, who witnesses say may have accelerated suddenly to avoid an accident, was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Unsubstantiated reports gleaned from police scanners on the date of the incident described the driver as "very high."
Manning is currently being treated at Harborview. "She's in the burn unit, she has second- and third-degree burns on her ankles and lower legs." Bothers said. "They're trying to control her pain. She's in good spirits."
Bothers said that concerned community members can bring cards and well-wishes for Manning to Wildrose (1021 E Pike St.). "She'll be back out at the bar on Monday," she assured.
