White Devil
Theater Schmeater
Through October 4
Listening to director Linda Lombardi talk about directing the 16th-century drama, White Devil (which opens September 12 at Theatre Schmeater), one gets the feeling that directing the show isn't so much a chore, as a labor of love.
"As I made the decision to set the play in the '50s, and I started thinking about McCarthyism, that's when I connected with the play. And once the actors got involved in the process, it became even more exciting for me," said Lombardi, discussing how she sees the play taking form. She went on to explain that the play is about two married couples, and that two of the spouses have an affair.
"The husband of one couple and the wife of the other couple start having an affair, and then they decide to do away with their spouses," said Lombardi. "Then they think that they've gotten away with the murders and are very happy, but the family members of the murdered spouses decide to get revenge."
"Everyone lies on each other and no one trusts anyone. It's a lot like what was going on in the McCarthy era," said Lombardi. She went on to say that she hopes many people see the play and, after leaving the theater, talk about what they've seen and tell others to see the play. "I hope they will enjoy the viciousness of the characters," she said.
