If you're like most Seattleites, you might remember a place called Hidmo's being mentioned both in the mainstream media, and in a more positive story done by Real Change newspaper. What hasn't been reported is that this small, out-of-the-way Eritrean restaurant also hosts a cutting-edge open mic night, co-sponsored by CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse) every first Saturday of the month.
This month's event, on September 6, featured songstress Felicia Loud, who captivated the audience with both a capella singing and soulful musically-accompanied songs.
Before Loud, the open mic featured local spoken-word performers "spitting" original work, including some ripe rap and freestyling by Mikeya (who also served as co-host with El Dia, of 1st Quarter Storm), and then the floor was open to even more free expression by those who wanted to perform to the backbeats provided by DJ Miss A. And yes, the food rocked, provided by the two gracious owners of Hidmo's.
The next Ladies First night will feature Amber Flame, Ela and THEEsatisfaction, and takes place at Hidmo's, located at 20th and Jackson. Also, if you missed last weekend's action and can't wait until October for Ladies First, you can join the fun at a fundraiser/dance on September 12, or you can enjoy some local hip-hop on the last Saturday of this month. For more information, go to http://www.cara-seattle.org/ladiesfirst.html, or http:///myspace.com/seattleladiesfirst. See you there!
