Beautiful Five Years tugs at heartstrings
Beautiful Five Years tugs at heartstrings
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

The Last Five Years
Ethnic Cultural Center
Through October 5

Three years doesn't seem like that long a time ago, but with so much changing so fast in the world as I write this, it seems like the difference between now and a hundred years in the future. With that in mind, it's good to know some things are constant and, in that constancy, are as refreshing as the first time I experienced them - like the delightfully bittersweet musical The Last Five Years, first presented by Re-Act in 2005, and represented this fall in a spot on version that's just as heartbreaking and funny as the original production.

This production (which closes this weekend, so hurry in before it's another three years before you can see Re-Act do this show again), which marks Re-Act's 15th anniversary, stars Jason Kappus as Jamie, a young and successful Jewish writer who hooks up with Cathy, a less successful "shiksa" actress (Jessica Skerritt, looking bouncy and gorgeous).

The musical traces the route of a love affair, from the crash-and-burn phase (which comes first, rather than last, as we hear Cathy achingly sing that "Jamie's over/and I'm still hurting" while in another spotlighted scene, Jamie sings of his new found love for his "Shiksa Goddess." From there the story weaves onward, showing the cracks that appear in the relationship as writer becomes a media darling and actress gets stuck in bit parts in out-of-the-way summer theaters.

Beautifully sung by Kappus and Skerritt, The Last Five Years will tug at your heart, whether you're in love, out of love, or somewhere in between. And it speaks to the human condition in a way that everyone can relate to, even uplifting the spirit as the sad story of these star-crossed lovers unfolds in song on stage.
