The White Devil
Directed by Linda Lombardi
Theater Schmeater
Through October 4
It's quite a feat when the actors in a production take your mind somewhere else to such an extent that you not only forgive the fact that you're playing catch-up with the plot, but also that the set is mostly a bare room. This feat was more than accomplished by the talented cast of John Webster's classic murder/drama The White Devil, which has been updated by talented director Linda Lombardi to take place in the 1950s from its original setting of the 1500s.
The plot is the classic story of two people (Chris Macdonald, channeling actors like Robert Mitchum from The River in a perfect performance, and sweetly beautiful Annie Jantzer, reminiscent of a young Natalie Wood) who fall for each other and decide to off their spouses so they can pursue their lusts.
There are other plot twists, in which the soon-to-be-dead spouses and their minions (notably Andy Clawson, who is wonderfully sleazy and watchable in his role of the "helping brother") all plot revenge, determining to one-up the others. Of course, everyone dies (as the program advertises) - or rather, both of the cheating spouses and their poor, innocent, faithful spouses, and a few others. Be warned; the theater is very intimate, and the gunshots that are part of the play are up close and personal - so much so that both myself and my date of the evening jumped when that moment finally arrived in the action. White Devil is the perfect start to the season of darkness. For more information, call 206-324-5801, or go to www.schmeater.org.
