HARMONY HILL RETREAT CENTER HOSTS FREE CANCER RETREAT FOR LGBT COMMUNITY
After six years of providing an annual cancer retreat for sexual minority women, Harmony Hill is pleased to announce the expansion of this program into the first customized retreat for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) participants. This inaugural program is NO CHARGE and will take place November 7-9, 2009 at Harmony Hill's beautiful 12-acre site overlooking Hood Canal in Union, WA, just two hours from Seattle, one hour from Tacoma and Olympia.

Research evidence suggests that LGBT people may be at higher risk for some types of cancer such as breast cancer, cancers related to AIDS, lung cancer, and cancers caused by human papillomavirus. However, many doctors, nurses, and other health care providers have not had sufficient training to understand the specific health experiences of LGBT people. This can create barriers to optimal health and reluctance to access support services. The LGBT cancer retreat will be staffed by knowledgeable facilitators with experience working with the LGBT population, to ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all participants.

"Although all of Harmony Hill's programs are open to anyone regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation, we are especially pleased to be able to offer this opportunity for the LGBT community to experience this transformational program in a comfortable, accepting and nurturing environment," stated Gretchen Schodde, Executive Director.

Harmony Hill has been offering residential cancer programs since 1994. Using stress reduction skills, guided imagery, daily support groups for learning and sharing, yoga and massage, participants facilitate their own healing and restore quality of life. In 2004 Harmony Hill, with the help of grants and many generous donors, began offering all of their cancer programs at no charge.

Harmony Hill, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the Pacific Northwest's only wellness and retreat center that specialized in programs for people living with cancer. Located in Union, WA on Hood Canal, Harmony Hill also provides wellness and renewal retreats, and facilities rentals for groups. Income from facility rentals helps support the cancer program, which is offered at no cost to participants.

For more information and to sign up for this FREE weekend, call 360-898-2363 or visit www.harmonyhill.org.

THE ESOTERICS PRESENT "DAMAN: THE SEVEN CREATIONS"
On the second of his sojourns to India, The Esoterics' director Eric Banks had the opportunity to study the ancient texts and singing practices of the Parsis, the Zoroastrians who have lived in the region around Bombay since the eighth century. In his research at the Gama Oriental Institute, Eric studied the Avesta, the earliest Persian scriptures of Zoroastrianism - arguably the world's oldest monotheism - a faith that has influenced most of the practiced religions on the planet. While in Bombay, Eric researched the Gathas, which are most likely the oldest chants in recorded history. These hymns of the prophet Zarathustra have been handed down by the rote memorization of Zoroastrian priests, from father to son, since they were first uttered.

In addition to the Gathas, Eric studied a ninth-century manuscript of the Persian cosmology, called the Bundahishn. Selecting texts from both of these sources, Eric assembled the libretto and composed a seven-movement surround-sound opera for 40 a cappella voices - one that incorporates ancient Persian scripture and melodies to recount the origin of the universe in dramatic detail, acknowledge the cosmic balance between good and evil, and emphasize the human choice between these two that is so essential to the Zoroastrian faith.

Concerts in Seattle will be held on Saturday, October 11, at 8 p.m., at the Olympic Sculpture Park Pavilion, 2901 Western Ave. (with limited seating, please purchase tickets online) and on Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4139 42nd Ave. SW. Tickets are $20 at the door; $18 in advance online; $15 for students and seniors, the un(der)employed, and the differently-abled. Ticket price for groups of five or more is $12 per person. Active singers of any choral group may attend for $10. Advance online at www.TheEsoterics; tickets for the door price can be reserved by phone at 206-935-7779.

This year's guest sermon will be delivered by Jordan Goldwarg at 9:15 a.m. and noon.

As a competitive athlete and as a coach, he has taken special interest in how LGBT people are accepted in those environments.
