The Crystal Method treating Seattle fans to Halloween ear candy
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Amidst the witches and goblins out tonight for the year's spookiest holiday, you'll find those wearing arch-supported sneakers, breathable cotton shirts, and fluorescent glow sticks around their necks all headed to WaMu Theater. The occasion is a wicked double treat, Halloween and an electronic triple-bill featuring a who's who of the dance world. The Crystal Method, Moby and Paul Van Dyk will perform back-to-back sets into the wee hours of morning to an expected roomful of movers, shakers, and dehydrated bodies in what's being touted as "Freak Night." This Northwest dance lover's ritual is celebrating its 12th installment of terror-iffic parties on the mother of all dark nights. Tickets are $55 (+ $2 tax) at the door. The Crystal Method, a Grammy-nominated duo based in California, moonlight as Democratic boosters when not sporting their hats of musical wizadry - their club hit "Now is the Time," a prominent slogan of the '60s civil rights movement, was recently remixed to incorporate bits of Barack Obama's speech from the Denver convention. You can ear-sample the track at www.myspace.com/thecrystalmethod.

I caught up with half of this dynamic electronic act just before he embarked on his journey to Seattle. Here's the creepy, frightening, and chilling conversation Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method and I had inside "The Music Lounge."

Albert Rodriguez: How does Seattle figure into the electronic scene?

Scott Kirkland: Seattle has been a vibrant music scene going back to Jimi Hendrix. It's always been a city that's had a different way of looking at things and has produced a lot of major musicians. Seattle is a city that every DJ in the world who enjoys a following has played there, and it's obviously one of the biggest cities in the US to hit.

Rodriguez: Since you're performing with Moby, do you have a favorite Moby song?

Kirkland: Definitely, "Go" is my favorite, going back to the early '90s rave-techno sound. But his Play album is sheer genius from end to end.

Rodriguez: Does The Crystal Method have an after-show ritual?

Kirkland: Try not to drink the rest of the vodka and make it back safely to the hotel, that's pretty much our ritual.

Rodriguez: Do you guys still play "Now is the Time" on tour?

Kirkland: Oh yeah, we've been playing it ever since we finished it. It's been going on for some time, in every single city we play it.

Rodriguez: Will you play it on Election Night somewhere?

Kirkland: We don't have any plans right now for Election Night. If someone offers, definitely.

Rodriguez: Do you recall the craziest crowd you've ever drawn?

Kirkland: Crazy as in out of control, probably many of those shows we did on the Family Values tour, where we were playing with Filter, Limp Bizkit and Method Man - those were kind of crazy because of the environment, playing in front of 14 or 15,000 people. Fun, as far as hyped, there was a show in early '98 in Aukland, New Zealand - it was ridiculous, 1,200 people crammed into a room that could fit about 600 to 800. It was straight up and down the whole time and really, really something. The last time we were in Seattle, we played at The Showbox and that was a lot of fun - it was a great show.

Rodriguez: How will you vote on California's Proposition 8?

Kirkland: I'm against 8. Equality for all.

Rodriguez: Is there such a thing as electronic groupies?

Kirkland: There are people who're really into your band and follow you around. This past Friday night we were in Nashville and this guy that's lived in Detroit for quite some time, who has seen us there many, many times, moved to Kentucky and he and his brother were supposed to drive down to Nashville. Something happened, his brother couldn't make it and he had no other way to get down there, so he took a $240 round-trip cab from Kentucky to Nashville. So there are those that have really great passion.

Rodriguez: Has The Crystal Method ever had a wardrobe malfunction onstage?

Kirkland: Sure, there have been times when I ripped my pants jumping up and down like a maniac, but nothing too embarrassing.

Rodriguez: Where haven't you played that you would love to play at?

Kirkland: Mt. Fuji in Japan, they have a festival up there that would be a lot of fun. Sasquatch, that would be a great event as well. Probably Iceland. The fun cities are the small ones you never really get to see much. I remember Omaha was a lot of fun, Fargo and Boise.

Rodriguez: Did you assemble a Halloween costume yet?

Kirkland: No, I have not. My partner [Ken Jordan] and his girlfriend are going as Jeannie from the TV show [I Dream of Jeannie]. She's going to be the perfect genie and he has a military outfit like the guy on the show. That kind of makes it difficult because she's going to have to be standing somewhere nearby, so that everybody gets his outfit, and there's nothing I can really do. But I'll come up with something to blend in.

Rodriguez: Do you have an all-time worst Halloween costume?

Kirkland: I was Jimmy Carter back in '78 or something; that was probably one of the worst. A couple years back we bought mullets and trucker caps.

Rodriguez: Maybe you can dress up as Moby.

Kirkland: I did think about that.
