THE WILLIAMS INSTITUTE ESTIMATES 18,000 SAME-SEX COUPLES MARRIED IN CALIFORNIA
THE WILLIAMS INSTITUTE ESTIMATES 18,000 SAME-SEX COUPLES MARRIED IN CALIFORNIA
Experts Available to Discuss California's Proposition 8 and Other Marriage Related Bans; Demographic, Economic and Legal Perspectives on Same-Sex Marriages

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Experts from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law are available to discuss the demographic, economic and legal implications of California's Proposition 8, as well as other related November 4th votes on same-sex marriage in Arizona and Florida.

INFORMATION ON SAME-SEX MARRAIGES IN CALIFORNIA:

The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law estimates that by Election Day 2008 approximately 18,000 same-sex couples will have married in California. Same-sex couples have been legally permitted to marry in California since June 17, 2008. On Election Day, Californians will be voting on Proposition 8 which, if passed, would ban same-sex marriages in the state.

A note on the estimate:

Marriage licenses in California do not include the sex of spouses. The Williams Institute's estimate is primarily derived by comparing total marriages in the state in 2007 to marriages in 2008 and assuming that all increases are attributable to marriages by same-sex couples.

The Williams Institute, a research center at UCLA School of Law, is the country's first national think tank dedicated to research on issues of sexual orientation law and public policy, and it is the only research center at a law school dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues.
