Ladies First offers provocative spoken-word, hip-hop performances
Ladies First offers provocative spoken-word, hip-hop performances
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

From the diverse open mic to the soulful purr and growling singing style of the first feature, Cristina Orbe, last weekend's Ladies First at Hidmo Eritrean restaurant was off the chain and definitely out of any kind of box. And the "spit" was feminine and powerful.

Offering new songs that kept everyone in the capacity crowd trained on the stage, Orbe wove a spell of magic, singing about love lost, lust and empowerment that everyone seemed to relate to.

After Orbe's stirring performance, the duo from Portland, Good Sistah/Bad Sistah, served up explosively political "sister spit" that rocked and shook the crowd to its core and had many cheering and laughing in shared understanding. This was even more obvious when the duo did the three politically charged "Political Man" pieces that had some audience members shaking heads and clapping energetically in response to these provocative pieces.

Ending the evening on a fever pitch was hip-hop artist and MC Invincible from Detroit, who did a call and response set that had audience members on their feet, dancing, clapping and waving hands to the soul-shaking rhythms of this truly "invincible" female artist.

Combine with more of Hidmo's delightfully spicy Eritrean cuisine, it was an evening to remember, and if you missed this one, you can check it all out next month, on the first Saturday in December, at 20th and Jackson.
