"LADY WITH THE LAMP"
FUNDRAISER AT SEATTLE EAGLE
HONORS ACT OF SELFLESSNESS
FOR DYING MAN
On Saturday, November 15, the Seattle Eagle, 314 E. Pike St., will host a fundraising benefit from 7-11 p.m. to cover medical expenses incurred by Lael Sokvitne when she intervened during the Eagle's Vibrator night on September 16, to resuccitate a man, Johnny, whom she found lying on the floor unconscious, not breathing and bleeding from his mouth.
Moments after performing CPR, she learned that Johnny was HIV-positive. After making her statement to the police she headed to Swedish Medical Center for the antiretroviral medication that greatly reduced the effects of the virus if taken within 48 hours of exposure. After spending nine hours in the emergency room and then trying three pharmacies, she was finally able to fill the prescriptions she'd been given by Swedish. The total cost was $2,370, a steep price for Lael, who teaches yoga for a living and has minimal insurance.
Sadly, Johnny never regained consciousness and passed away four days after he was revived by Lael. The fundraiser will include a living memorial to Johnny.
A reduced-rate CPR certification course will be held during the afternoon, followed by the evening fundraiser. A raffle with prizes donated by local businesses will be held. Tickets for the evening benefit will be $10 at the door.

A Conversation With& Alan Van Capelle and Randi Weingarten - Newly-elected American Federation of Teachers' President Randi Weingarten and Alan Van Capelle, executive director of New York's Empire State Pride Agenda, reflect on the conversion of paths of the American Labor and LGBT rights' movements, with special attention to bringing people together to organize communities, the joy of teaching, and creating safe school environments.
Real to Reel: Freehold - In the Academy Award-winning documentary short, Freeheld, filmmaker Cynthia Wade chronicles Police Lt. Laurel Hester's tireless, end-of-life journey to ensure that her pension benefits would be extended to her life-partner, Stacie.
