Theatre Machine's provocative, tongue-in-cheek Vinegar Tom
Theatre Machine's provocative, tongue-in-cheek Vinegar Tom

Vinegar Tom Stone Soup Theatre November 6-15

In these times of economic insecurity in the marketplace, it's heartening to see a new theatre company launch themselves onto Seattle's fluctuating arts scene. It is especially heartening to see a favorite like Stone Soup Theatre (which has managed not only to weather the stormy waters that took away several small companies in the last few years, but expand into two theater spaces) working with new company, Theatre Machine, on their maiden production, Vinegar Tom, a provocative Caryl Churchill play that closed last weekend.

The play, set in a small village in the 1700s, delves into the horrific phenomenon that plagued New England's early days, that of the witch trials which is responsible for the brutal deaths of over 6,000 women, men, and children, and even more than a few cats (who were thought to be witches' familiars or a living embodiment of evil).

At times, some of the material reminded me of my college anthropology or women's studies classes in how the message of feminist outrage at some of the most vile acts by "witch hunters" being done to women was often a little heavy-handed. Even with this mild criticism, Theatre Machine seems poised to take on worthy and thought-provoking subject matter with a tongue-in-cheek manner that, at play's end, I found refreshing. Trust me, this is a company to keep an eye out for in the future.
