| Cupcakes and karaoke for a cause |

It was snowing outside and ice was forming on the streets, but inside the CARA offices (Committee Against Rape and Abuse) things were warm and joyful. The event was the annual "Cupcake Party," a fundraiser for the group, which focuses on helping women in the community find their own empowerment with a series of events, including the monthly "Ladies First" poetry/hip-hop event at Hidmo Eritrean restaurant every first Saturday of the month.
The "Cupcake Party" was provided with a variety of cupcakes from Cupcake Royale, and members of CARA also contributed ribs, chips and dips and other delicious holiday treats for those who braved last Saturday's brutal cold snap. Members and those who support the organization noshed and shared stories about other causes, including last week's annual MLK Grinch Awards Party, which took place at the Labor Temple on Thursday, December 11. Then it was time for karaoke, which was such a hit at CARA's summer barbecue in August. Members sang old hits like "Just a Gigolo," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and board member Lulu did a rousing version of The Cranberries' "Zombie," which had everyone joining in and laughing it up. For more information about future CARA events, go to www.cara-seattle.org/ladiesfirst.html or myspace.com/seattleladiesfirst.
