| President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden
Invite LGBT Family to Join Them on Inaugural Whistle Stop Tour |
Dear Friends:
I have some very exciting news to share with you all. My colleague and friend Lisa Hazirjian -- http://www.equalityohio.org/08site/eoboard.htm -- and her partner Michelle are one of the 16 American families that have been chosen to participate in the Delegation of Americans joining the Obamas and the Bidens on their historic train trip from Philadelphia to Washington, DC. Lisa and Michelle will participate in all official Inaugural events as honored guests of the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect.
I met Lisa when I was serving as a Political Advisor to and LGBT Steering Committee Chair for the Edwards Campaign. Lisa was an incredibly valuable member of our Steering Committee. After Edwards dropped out, Lisa joined me and dozens of others in endorsing Barack Obama for President. Since that time, Lisa has put in hundreds of volunteers hours in Pennsylvania and Ohio for the campaign--serving as the Cleveland LGBT Pride Director for the campaign in the general election. Field operatives on the ground in Cleveland raved about Lisa's work and confirmed that she was an integral part of the campaign's successful operation in Ohio.
Lisa chose to begin her political involvement due to her personal experiences with prejudice and discrimination. When offered a tenure track position at a private university, she inquired about benefits for her life partner Michelle. Upon hearing this, the university in question chose to rescind their offer entirely instead of offering benefits to a committed same-sex couple. It was this event that inspired Lisa to increase her involvement in politics at the grassroots level in the hope of creating a political climate that would lead to the passage of a federal law prohibiting employment discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.
She is now establishing herself as a leader in our community at the grassroots level, serving as an at-large board member of Equality Ohio, a member of the incredibly effective Cleveland Stonewall Democrats, and a volunteer with Cleveland Families Count, the organization formed recently to defend the new domestic partnership registry in Cleveland.
I am proud of the work Lisa and Michelle have done on behalf of LGBT Americans and am proud of the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect for inviting Lisa and Michelle to join them on the beginning of their historic journey.
All my best,
Eric Stern
