| Marc Broussard, Asher Roth, Slumdog |
by Albert Rodriguez -
SGN A&E Writer
More potent than a bottle of Louisiana hot sauce and cuter than a kid sitting on Santa's lap, prepare yourself for the one and only Marc Broussard. The Lafayette native, a powerful vocalist with a bourbon-soaked Cajun accent, is my initial guest inside The Music Lounge this year - his interview will be right here on January 23. The first time I heard Broussard perform live was at the Museum of Flight and he nearly split the ceiling right down the middle with those deep, husky pipes - especially on his signature hit "Home." Having toured alongside Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson, the singer-guitarist has gradually made a name for himself around the country. In 2008, he joined Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for a string of tour dates. Aside from being adorable and loaded with grade-A talent, Broussard is also a generous philanthropist; he donated all proceeds from a bootleg CD to victims of Hurricane Katrina, built homes with Habitat for Humanity, and lent his services as spokesperson for Louisiana's United Way program. He performs January 24 at The Showbow Market (www.showboxonline.com), but he makes a pit stop at The Music Lounge the day before. Check out Broussard's newest album Keep Coming Back at your favorite music store.
I'm a sucker for hot guys who can hold a note, and even ones who can't, so I'm announcing a musical crush on hip-hop newbie Asher Roth. I haven't decided whether this kid, an all-American redhead that confesses to watching porn and throwing keg parties (hey, nothing wrong with that), is the real deal or an Eminem shadow. What I do know is Roth was on a recent flight from Atlanta to LA when some bozo stood up and yelled that he had a bomb and it was this skinny, milky-white rap star (and his posse) who tackled the idiot to the ground. Add superhero to Roth's brief resume. I got this information directly from the artist's management - believe me, even on a Ding Dong buzz I still can't invent shit like this up. Ear-sample Roth's work, already drawing support from such biggies as Jay-Z, at MySpace or YouTube.
I caught a late afternoon showing of Slumdog Millionaire last week with a group of friends, and it's a terrific movie I recommend seeing. True to Danny Boyle's style (he directed Trainspotting), the film is fast-paced and jammed with great tunes. Available on Interscope Records, the soundtrack is scored by AR Rahman and spotlights several of Southern Asia's top performers, including Sri Lankan-born and Grammy nominee M.I.A. who collaborates with Rahman on the opening track, "O.Saya." This marks the second time "Paper Planes," a Record of the Year contender, lands on a film soundtrack of 2008 - it previously appeared on the motion picture compilation for the stoner comedy Pineapple Express. The prime cuts on Slumdog Millionaire, each composed and performed by Rahman, are "Ringa Ringa" featuring Alka Yagnik, "Latika's Theme" featuring Suzanne, and "Jai Ho" featuring Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, and Vijay Prakash. See the movie first, get the CD and then post borderline inappropriate messages on lead star Dev Patel's fan page on Facebook (okay, I confess after a few beers - so what?).
Finally, do you know Lil Wayne - the guy with a gold grill who acts as if he just swallowed an entire vodka plant in Russia? Well, he's coming to Seattle this month, so get ready to parrrr-tay! The Grammy-nominated rapper brings his "I Am Music Tour" to Key Arena on January 25 with special guests T-Pain, Gym Class Heroes and Keri Hilson. Tickets, priced between $39.75 and $125.75, are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations. What to wear to the big show? Bling, lots of it, and passage-clear nostrils to capture the gratuitous streams of pot smoke(medicinal, of course).
