DOMA Protest
Saturday, January 10
Seattle Central
Community College

On January 10, 2009, Join the Impact is reaching out to 1 million Americans to sign an open letter to President-elect Barack Obama, in response to his open letter to the LGBTQ community. In the President-elect's letter, he made five specific promises to the LGBTQ community. They were the following:

o Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and ensure that states treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws.

o Enact a fully inclusive Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

o Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

o Enact the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes against our community.

o Confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the stigma surrounding it.

o Amend the Uniting American Families Act to afford same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as married couples in our immigration system.

Join the Impact Seattle and the Queer Ally Coalition are joining organizers from 100 cities throughout the country on January 10, 2009 with a rally and a march. The protest will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Seattle Central Community College.

Organizers have a diverse group of speakers, musical performers, spoken-word artists, and political leaders who will take the stage. From SCCC, attendees will march to Westlake Park, 4th Ave. & Pine St., where organizers will focus on gathering signatures for the open letter to President-elect Obama from noon-2 p.m.

Seattle organizers invited Senator Pat Murray (D)-WA to speak at their rally because she voted in favor of the National Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 to either defend her position or to change her position and show her support to the LGBT community. As of this release, organizers have not heard from the Senator or her office.

The national protest against DOMA is the fourth impact organized by the Seattle based national grassroots Gay equality movement. On November 15, 2008, nearly 10,000 people marched in Seattle to oppose Proposition 8, the ballot measure that ended marriage equality in California. Seattle was only one of over 300 hundred cities internationally to "join the impact." Since then, Join the Impact organized "Day Without a Gay" and "Light Up the Night."

Join the Impact strongly believes visibility is essential if the Gay community is to realize full national equality and plans to organize monthly events throughout the country.
