Entre Hermanos continues work
Entre Hermanos continues work
by Marcos Martinez - SGN Contributing Writer

I want to let you know a little of what we've been up to here at Entre Hermanos. I've now been in this executive director job a bit over a year, and we are in a new period of organization-building.

During my first year, I've learned a great deal about Entre Hermanos' history, which has been helpful as I, the board and staff look to the future and think about our direction. I believe I have a sense of our history, and the capacity of this community non-profit to serve the Latino LGBT community of Seattle and King County.

Our mission here is to provide support and develop leadership within the Latino LGBT community. We provide a safe space that is also culturally appropriate and reinforcing of Latino Queer culture.

Another key part of our work is focused on addressing homophobia and racism in the larger Latino and white communities. This work is in keeping with our vision of a society in which marginalization and oppression cease to exist. We are also intent to reaching out and building bridges with other queer communities of color.

A major focus of our work continues to be in the prevention of HIV and STDs. This is because the epidemic continues, and the Latino community is affected disproportionately. This health disparity requires our attention and dedicated effort.

But Entre Hermanos is not only an HIV prevention organization. We also have a women's program, and we provide a space for the Latino Queer community to gather in and feel at home. This community-building, is an essential part of our work.

Our board and staff are currently engaged in looking to the future, and imagining the type of world we want to live in as LGBT Latinos. We're asking ourselves what types of programs or initiatives are needed to further contribute to the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

One emerging theme is how we can expand our service and support for women. The HIV prevention work we do is aimed primarily at men, since they are at much higher risk. We're not going to reduce that work, but we do want to increase and grow our efforts designed to serve the Latina Lesbian community. We currently have several funding proposals pending, which would enable us to move forward in that way. And we are committed to doing this work even without additional financial support.

Your thoughts and ideas about this are welcome. Please reach Marcos Martinez at 206-322-7700 or marcos@entrehermanos.org.
