Transgendered added to hate crime statute
Transgendered added to hate crime statute
The LGBT community gained further protection from violence today when the Washington state Senate approved a measure to add "Transgendered" to the definition of sexual orientation that is in the state's hate crime statute.

"Violence against another person is never acceptable. But when a person's race, ethnicity or sexual orientation spurs that violence, it is particularly heinous," said Sen. Joe McDermott, D-West Seattle, the bill's prime sponsor.

According to a recent study by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, reported incidents of violence against LGBT people rose by 24 percent in 2007. Of the reported incidents, 16 percent were motivated by anti-Transgender bias. Hates crimes against Transgender men increased by 65 percent alone.

"For too long, some individuals in our communities have been denied the basic acknowledgement of their existence under the law and this bill will guarantee all of our citizens' rights to safety," McDermott said.

At least 11 states and the District of Columbia have enacted protections against hate crimes based on a victim's perceived gender identity. McDermott credited Dave Iseminger of the Washington Student Lobby for the bill's success.

"It has been an honor to work on this bill to protect the Transgendered community. After hearing firsthand the stories of the attacks at Washington State University, I knew I had to do everything I could to pass this bill. I am committed to getting this bill to the governor's desk," said Iseminger.

The measure passed the Senate 36 to 12 and now moves onto the House of Representatives.
