| Jewish community condemns anti-Gay rally |
Leaders of the Jewish community (organizations listed below) are asking legislators who support equality of all people, regardless of faith, gender, sexual orientation or other characteristics, to stand with the Jewish community as we condemn the anti-Gay rights rally which took place on Thursday, March 19, 2009 in Olympia, WA.
The rally organizers have opposed federal hate crimes legislation, a National Day of Silence for victims of hate crimes based on sexual orientation, as well as equal employment policies at local businesses. Through the political initiative process, they have also - unsuccessfully - attempted to remove any reference to sexual orientation or sexual preference from existing anti-discrimination legislation in our state.
While the rally is couched in religious teachings, the Jewish community's support of Gay rights is steeped in our Jewish beliefs of "Love thy neighbor as thyself" as well as "Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh: All Israel is responsible for one another."
"The Jewish community is too familiar with hate directed our way simply due to our religion and will not stand by as others receive the same treatment," explained Richard Fruchter, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.
While there is no marriage equality bill under consideration in the Washington State legislature, SB 5688 provides rights to domestic partners on "equivalent terms" as those who are married. We support these equal rights.
Organizations supporting equality include: American Jewish Committee, Anti-Defamation League, Congregation Beth Shalom (Rabbi Jill Borodin), Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation (Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum), Hillel of the University of Washington (Rabbi Will Berkovitz), JConnect Seattle, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, National Council of Jewish Women, Temple Beth Am (Rabbis Beth Singer and Jonathan Singer), Temple Beth Hatfiloh (Rabbi Seth Goldstein), Temple B'nai Torah (Rabbi James L. Mirel, Rabbi Yohanna Kinberg, Cantor David Serkin-Poole), Temple De Hirsch Sinai, and the Washington Coalition of Rabbis.
