Day of Decision
Day of CA court decision
5:30 PM
Westlake Plaza
The Martin Luther King County Labor
Council today endorsed the "Day of Decision"
event which will mark the California
Supreme Court's decision on three petitions
to strike down Proposition 8.
The MLKCLC represents about 150 affiliates
and over 75,000 workers in the
greater Seattle area. It is affiliated with the
AFL-CIO but also includes Change To Win
unions working under "solidarity charters."
The Executive Board of the MLKCLC
voted unanimously to endorse the "Day of
Decision" at the request of Pride At Work,
the labor movement's LGBT constituency
organization. The MLKCLC amended its
bylaws in 2008 to add representation on the
Executive Board for Pride At Work and other
AFL-CIO constituency groups.
On March 4 this year, the National Executive
Council of the AFL-CIO voted unanimously
to call on the California Supreme
Court to strike down Prop 8.
In July 2006, the MLKCLC and 23 of its
affiliates signed on to amicus briefs supporting
marriage equality in Washington state's
Andersen v Sims and Castle v State cases.
Unlike the California Supreme Court, the
Washington Supreme Court ruled against
marriage equality in those cases.
The "Day of Decision" was also endorsed
by Washington State Jobs With Justice,
at Pride At Work's request. WSJWJ is a
workers' rights organization made up of labor,
community, student, and faith groups.
WSJWJ has regularly participated in the Seattle
Pride Parade.
Seattle's "Day of Decision" event will
take place at 5:30pm at Westlake Plaza,
on the day the California court announces
its decision. It is endorsed by a number of
groups including the ACLU, Equal Rights
Washington, the GSBA, Join The Impact,
Pride At Work, the Pride Foundation, the
Seattle Gay News, and Washington State
Stonewall Democrats.
Prop 8, which passed in November 2008,
reversed the court's previous decision in favor
of marriage equality in the state of California.
In petitions filed by Lambda Legal,
the ACLU, and the National Center for Lesbian
Rights, the court is now being asked to
strike Prop 8. Hearings were held on March
5, and the court has 90 days from that date to
issue its ruling. No specific date for the ruling
has been announced.
