Power of One Conference
University of Puget Sound
April 24-26

Sexuality, art, faith, and politics will all be part of the mix as college students and their advisors from across the Northwest gather at the Power of One Queer and Allies Leadership Conference at University of Puget Sound, over the weekend of April 24-26, 2009.

The event, now in its fifth year, will create a vibrant venue for the exchange of ideas and experiences by Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender youth, and all who ally with them. The keynote speaker will be Kate Bornstein, New York-based author, playwright, and performance artist, who has toured colleges and schools leading workshops on the subjects of sex, gender, and teen suicide. Her most recent book is Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws. Other books include Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us and the cyber-romance-action novel Nearly Roadkill, co-written with Caitlin Sullivan.

The three-day conference will include a panel discussion on the intersection of faith and sexuality, sessions on student leadership and engaging in the political process, a Lavender Alumni Dinner for Puget Sound alumni and a drag show. See the links below for details.

The mission of the 2009 Power of One conference is to explore the Queer experience through the interrelated social lenses of art, faith, and politics. Performance art will be combined with discussions on the position of Queer art locally and globally, and on the relationship between the artist and the community. Attendees will also explore the tensions, difficulties, and triumphs of the evolving relationship between sexuality and a variety of spiritual practices. On the political front, the conference will look at the possibilities for the Gay equality movement and at what can be accomplished by Queer and allied students organizing on campuses and in communities.

Past conferences have served not only as a means of exchanging ideas, but as a catalyst for binding all students with their common aspirations and challenges, thus helping dispel the "them versus us" attitude that is often the first refuge of students who feel alienated by their sexual identity.

Sponsors of Power of One include National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Region V; University of Puget Sound's Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Spirituality, Service, and Social Justice, Faculty Diversity Committee, and School of Education; East Pierce County Methodist Pastors; and Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, among others.
