| Mr., Ms. Lesbian, and Miss Gay Cinco de Mayo 2009 crowned |
by Shaun Knittel -
SGN Staff Writer
Efren Chacon, host of CALIENTE Fridays at Neighbors Underground, oversaw the seventh annual crowning of Mr., Ms. Lesbian, and Miss Gay Cinco de Mayo 2009 May 1. From 9 p.m. - 2 a.m., Neighbors Underground was transformed into a red, white, and green pageant where drag queens mingled with rancheros and Lesbian Latinas drank margaritas to the sights and sounds of Cinco de Mayo - LGBT style.
Each contestant was judged by the who's who of the LGBT Latino higharchey, on appearance, talent, and how well they answered questions from the judges. Although the event was primarily emceed in Spanish, Efren translated for the non-Spanish speakers in the audience. The highlight of the evening was the talent competition - sexuality, amazing dancing, and theatrics were incorporated into each performance, keeping the audience on their feet dancing and cheering nearly the whole time.
This year's Mr. Gay Cinco de Mayo 2009 is Joel De La Fuente, Miss Gay Cinco de Mayo 2009 is Alexandra La Piere, and Gaby is Ms. Gay Lesbian Cinco de Mayo 2009. They each win one year of free cover charge entrance to CALIENTE and $300 cash prize.
The three winners take on the responsibility that comes with the title. Each has to perform at CALIENTE once a month and participate in outreach to promote HIV prevention with People of Color Against AIDS Network (POCAAN), an agency that offers service to the LGBT Latino community in Seattle.
